Health and Nutrition in Jeffco Schools
Exciting News From Jeffco Food Services
Jeffco has become a member of School Food Focus. FOCUS, which stands for Food Options for Children in Urban Schools, is an organization dedicated to helping large school districts provide items that are less processed, more local, and more sustainably produced.
Beginning on September 14, all schools in Jeffco will feature a "Colorado Proud Day" once every month. These events will have menus that consist of products grown, raised, or processed in the state of Colorado.
We have also been awarded a grant from Salad Bars Move2 Schools for the equipment necessary to pilot 6 self-serve salad bars in Jeffco schools. These bars will feature fresh fruits and vegetables.
In addition, our district has a new Healthy Schools Coordinator. Please welcome Emily O'Winter!
Emily grew up in Colorado, obtained her undergraduate degree in Exercise Physiology, and dual master’s degrees in Public Health and Urban Planning, with an emphasis on healthy communities. She understands the crucial role parents play in both education and health; she hopes to work closely with parents toward creating healthier schools and openly invites your input and involvement regarding school health. She is passionate about healthy living, wellness, and the impact our surroundings have on our health and very much looks forward to working with Jeffco and with all of you! You can reach her at eowinter@jeffco.k12.co.us.
Join your child for lunch and see all the positive changes coming to your child's school!
The all-new Health and Nutrition section of Jeffco PTA is maintained by Jeffco Parents Focus on School Nutrition, which was founded by parents of students in the Jefferson County Public Schools district who are concerned about the nutritional well-being of all children. For more information or if you'd like to get involved, please email us at ParentsFocusOnNutrition@jeffcopta.org. Thank you for your visit!
Jeffco will be the first district in Colorado to pilot on-line applications for free and reduced price meals which should speed up the approval process for parents considerably.

1. Jeffco is in the process of hiring a new Executive Chef who will help us to continue in the direction of offering nutritious, fresh locally sourced, prepared from scratch meals for Jeffco students. Click Here for the link to Chef Jessica our new Executive Chef.
2. Jeffco is ready to begin offering many “made from scratch” items to their students this school year.
a. This year’s menu will feature made from scratch: Macaroni and Cheese, Grilled Cheese Sandwich, Baked Penne Pasta, Cheese Quesadilla, Pigs in a Blanket, Hot Ham and Cheese Pocket, Black Beans and Rice, Spanish Rice
3. Several of the products featured on our menus will be obtained from a “local” source. Our lunch burritos at the elementary school are being prepared by Culinaire Foods, located in Denver, as is the blueberry sauce which will replace syrup on our popular Brunch for Lunch which features French toast and sausage. We are having custom spice packets made to our specifications by Custom Blending in Ft. Collins for preparing such items as homemade marinara sauce and taco meat.
4. Canned Vegetables have been replaced with frozen or fresh. Produce is purchased requesting “local” when it is available and within our cost restraints.
5. Canned fruits are limited on the menu and are all purchased “packed in juice” rather than syrup pack.
6. Peanut Butter Sandwiches have been replaced by a very tasty sunbutter sandwich. The spread, made from sunflower seeds, is very similar in taste and usability to peanut butter but is safe for students with peanut and other tree nut allergies.
7. Our secondary menu will feature and expansion of the “bar” concept started with the Build Your Own Burrito Bars last year. This year, the burrito bar will be featured 2 days per week, a new Build Your Own Bowl line will give students the opportunity to design a customized Asian Bowl and they will be able to Build Your Own Burger 1 day a week selecting from beef patties, chicken patties or veggie patties with a variety of cheeses and condiments.
8. Secondary students will also find fresh baked bread bowls filled with hearty soups, fruit and yogurt parfaits and a selection of 4 different entrée salads on their menus.
9. Elementary students will find a new, slimmed down type of menu. Their menu will feature 1 hot entrée daily as well as a cold sandwich and 4 different entrée salads. There are at least 2 menu choices which allow students to select a vegetarian meal offered daily. Students will be offered an assortment of fruits and vegetables including ate lease 3 fresh fruit and 3 fresh vegetable offerings every day.
10. As we begin the school year 14 Jeffco schools with high populations of Free and reduced eligible students will be serving a Universal Free Breakfast in the classroom. As students arrive at their first period class they will find a nutritious breakfast waiting for them.
11. Recognizing that hunger does not take a summer vacation, Jeffco had 24 sites this summer that offered lunch to students at no charge.
12. As we continue our green initiative, we have installed new cleaners on all of our dish machines that feature green star certified cleaners. Our elementaries have all been switched from Styrofoam to washable trays.
